SxSW Memories Pt 2

March 19th – (SXSW, Austin)

This was one of the most fun days of SxSW. Our only show for the day was at 1pm and was at Fort Fader. It’s an off site venue that is literally a huuuugggee fort filled with tons of Southern Comfort. Seriously, barrels of it. Because we were the first band to play we actually got a sound check, which I found more and more to be a rarity SxSW. The guy who was running our show was apparently Stevie Wonder's drummer which was only slightly blowing my mind the entire time we were there. After our show we went and hit up some free swag that they had at Fort Fader. One of the great parts about being an artist and playing at SxSW is all the free stuff that everyone tries to give you. For the most part it’s pretty lame stuff that’d you never really want to use but this was some leegggiiiitttt swag. Ray Bans and Levi’s. Yeah, it was fucking tight. It was pretty smart on their part though cause then all the artists that play there will be walking advertisements for them. The next few hours just consisted of us hanging out at Fort Fader and talking with all the other artists back stage, eating Pasticcios, beef jerky and drinking waaayy to much SoCo. Shaun even talked to Taylor Hanson(!) because he was in a band called Tinted Windows that were playing some time after us (I didn’t think they were good at all but that’s just my opinion so I encourage everyone to make that decision for them selves http://www.myspace.com/tintedwindows). After watching Late of the Pier for the second time in two days, and they were still amazing, a couple of us decided to head off to go wander around the rest of the festival.

I ended up seeing M. Ward, Janelle Monae (who was fucking amazing! and who at certain points I actually considered that she might not be a human but actually a robot), hung out with Perez Hilton for a bit (which was fun but reeeeeaaaaallllly weird because literally every couple of minutes people would come up to him and get their picture taken with him. I imagine it would get really old really quick but he didn’t seem to mind all that much), and Big Boi. Yup Big Boi. Probably my high-lite of the whole festival. Luke and I pushed our way up to the front so we had a clear view of him and just rapped along for about an hour. When Bombs Over Baghdad hit I literally thought I was going to puke the bass was so intense. Then i went back to the hotel and did. Just Kidding...

SxSW Memories

All the hubbub about SxSW this year made really jealous of all the people that get to go because it was sooo much fun last year. Since i'm not going i went back and read some stuff i wrote about our adventures in Austin last year and i thought i'd share some with you all. So here you go!

(March 18th, 2009 SXSW Austin, Maggie Mae's and Dirty Dogs)

Our first morning of SxSW, we went and had breakfast at Denny’s (which was surprisingly better than any Denny's i'd had before) where I found a plastic green token that had a shamrock on one side and said “good luck” on the other. I took this as a good sign and kept it with me the whole of SxSW. The first show was a Maggie Mae’s, which had a three level stage and provided some interesting playing and staging ideas. And by interesting I mean weird and difficult but still really fun. Right after we finished our first show we grabbed our gear and carried it two blocks down to the Dirty Dog for our next show later that day. We had a good chunk of time between load in and when the show actually started so we wandered around 6th st for the next couple hours taking in all the sights and insanity.

We ended up seeing two bands that we were all really excited to see, Ladyhawke and Late of the Pier. We saw Ladyhawke at Stubbs (which was an awesome out door venue with a huge stage and good food. Mettalica ended up playing there at some point though none of us cared to go) and Late of the Pier at La Zona Rosa (which was also awesome). La Zona Rosa was in my top three venues at SxSW. It feels like a huge dimly lit dance club that actually has two stages so there is barely any time between bands. We had to run back from Late of the Pier so we could make sure we made it back to our own show in time. It ended up being packed and may have been one of, if not, our best show of SxSW. Sleep came about 20 seconds after I hit the bed that night.

I had a dream last night that I was at a party and a big man brought in a HUGE bottle of alcohol, like novelty size, to celebrate something. But I knew it was poisoned! He started pouring four glasses and I was trying to think of a plan of attack for getting people to not drink it when suddenly Tina Fey (or more likely Liz Lemon) burst in the room and started dropping the glasses of poisoned alcohol on the ground saying "WHOOPS!" very loudly and unconvincingly. It's hard to replicate in real life or especially in a blog, but it was so funny that I immediately woke up and laughed out loud.

I need to eat some thai food leftovers now, before I die of starvation.

Sometimes when people ask me how i'm doing i wish i could figure out a more interesting way than just telling them. For instance, what if i said what cereal box mascot i was feeling like.

(I'm realizing that it works better when people ask you how you're feeling but that usually implies that at some point you were not feeling good but now hopefully you're feeling better. Which is weird, but anyways...)

This is actually great because a couple of bros and I had an awesome Weezer jam yesterday, and we were like "Man, we should have done this on Valentines day because how perfect would that be!" And now I am like "Holy crap we did it on the right day without even knowing, how perfect is that!" (Or I guess since this is a Weezer post I should go ahead and say "How cool is that!")

But it is also actually not great because I always loved that they formed on Valentines day, because if there is one kind of LOVE I love to celebrate, it is Weezer Love. Oh, and regular love I guess.

It's got really awesome music, Kid CuDi and Anna from The O.C. whose gorgeous so that always helps.

This is one of the coolest album packages i've seen in a looonnng time. It's done by a Philly rapper called Freeway and Produced by Jake One, from Seattle (WOOOOOOO!!!).

Freeway's 2007 album, "Free At Last", was one of my favorite hip-hop albums in the past five years i'm so i'm getting super hyped about this one.

I recommend skipping to 1:13 unless you just wanna watch some guy carry a metal briefcase around for a while.

FernGully is on TV right now, and I just had a shocking revelation that Lois from Big Love is Magi Lune. I had just watched the last episode of Big Love on demand and then I turned on FernGully while she was talking and I was like HOLD ON, I KNOW THIS. Confirmed on imdb.
There is so much I didn't remember about this movie that is coming back to me now. Like the ridiculous rap musical numbers, the creepy goo form of Hexxus, Batty Koda and the greatness of Robin Williams as an animated personality in general. I Need To Get Better At Blog Titles.

I am currently aspiring to get my picture with the Mythbusters. Preferably all at once, but more likely one at a time or in groups. I think it's going to be a long and winding road to track them all down. I photoshopped my head onto the body of a man and many young boys to illustrate this point.

I watched the last third of Apocalypto last night. We turned it on just as someone was getting their heart ripped out and then we couldn't look away. There is a fun built-in game called "spot the real panthers" that I invented. What you do is try to spot the real panthers. Or you can play it opposite and try to spot the fake panthers! I bet this would be a good movie to make a drinking game for. Like every time you say "Oh no!" but it would work the best the first time you watched it.

It was a pretty movie though.
Whenever I think of Mel Gibson I think of (besides the obvious) the Patriot, which we watched in my 7th grade U.S. History class, causing many a young female classmate of mine to print out a picture of Heath Ledger and put it in the front of her binder. RIP
I didn't have room for him on mine. I think it was full up with Hobbits and screen caps of Monty Python movies. Oh and Rivers Cuomo, of course.

okay so i just finished season two of true blood and i am very undecided if i like the show or not. what do you all think about it? I need some convincing one way or the other.

I mean, i love fantasy shit and HBO and Anna Paquin is a total babe. But at the same time, i thought this last season kinda sucked. It was almost (or maybe it actually was) too ridiculous to be good.

Yesterday I got this idea in my head that it would be cool to empty out this little travel bottle of Clinique Happy perfume that I've had since 6th grade and fill it up with a perfume that actually smells like it was made by humans on this planet and not aliens with a wildly different olfactory system. I don't even know why I kept it this long because I hardly ever wear perfume and I always thought this one smelled awful, but I guess when I was 11 I assumed that all perfumes must smell good, or else why would they have made it, and therefore maybe next time I smell it I will finally like it.

So I started spraying it out into my bathroom sink. It only took a minute to empty it, and it was a terrible minute of holding my breath, and keeping the water running, and opening the window, and being cold because the window was open, and just as the last few spritzes left the tiny straw I realized that I would not be able to fill this bottle up with another perfume. It wouldn't open. It was never meant to be opened. If I had been able to open it, why wouldn't I have just poured it out instead of emptying it spray by spray? Why wasn't that the first thing I tried to do? I don't know why my brain worked so slowly in this instance.

Anyway, now I am left wondering how long my bathroom is going to smell like a perfume that I hate.

Here is a truth I must accept, and maybe you must too: When it comes to chocolate flavored cereal that turns your milk brown, sometimes that milk is better than the actual cereal. Why is that? What I have learned from this is that I should not buy chocolate cereals, I should just buy chocolate milk.

I wish I could boycott NBC right now, but I would only be hurting myself, because I love their thursday night line-up so much. **$$$Double 30 Rock tonight!&&&** I would be the only one doing it, so nobody would notice, and I would be hurting Tina Fey, which is the last thing I want to do, ever. And I can't boycott Jay Leno any more than I have been doing for the last 4 months (plus the 17 years he was the host of The Tonight Show) because I never watched The Jay Leno Show (except for one time when Tina Fey was on, in which I was duped because she was only in the last 5 minutes). LE SIGH is all I can say. TV is important to me! It is not a waste of time, it is art, the most important modern art. And the Tonight show is the centerpiece of our collection. Again, le sigh.

Interesting thing I came across while googling something entirely not disney related the other day, there is a tumblr dedicated exclusively to the guy who plays Peter Pan at Disneyland.

I'm sure we all heard the *zany* (and incredibly cool) news that Lady Gaga was recently hired as a Creative Director at Polaroid, but now they have unveiled that their beloved instant film cameras will be resurrected from the grave (in fun modern colors, too)! Fuzzy Therapy

One of my favorite things to do is to just sitting with my dog and pet her. I call it "Puppy Therapy". When i'm out on tour though that's not possible so i've invented a new kind of therapy. It involves just looking at things that are way too cute for their own good. I think i'm going to call it "Fuzzy Therapy". So, if you ever need your own little personal Fuzzy Therapy just go to Cute Overload and soak it all up.

Fox is going to air a 20th anniversary special on The Simpsons on Jan 14th called THE SIMPSONS 20TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL – IN 3-D! ON ICE!
Apparently it's neither in 3-D or has anything to do with ice.

Growing up i never had cable tv so when my friends would talk about all the shows they watched on cable (Roundhouse, All That, Rugrats, Hey Arnold, Are you Afraid of the Dark) all i could ever talk about was The Simpsons (and Pokemon but that's besides the point). I've now accepted that The Simpsons is, and will always be, one my favorite shows of all time. There was actually a time in my life when i could go through an episode guide of the show and there were only about 5-10 episodes that i hadn't seen.

Hip-Hop Wednesday

Clipse are one of my favorite hip-hop groups around right now. They are two brothers, Malice and Pusha T, who are from Virginia and who pretty much only rap about selling coke. Thus their style has been dubbed: Coke-Rap. Now i don't really condone drugs but with them i'm okay with it.

They are credited with being one of the first groups to start wearing Bape, and they also have their own clothing line called Playcloths.

Letters of Note

I just found this cool website: Letters of Note. It collects written correspondences from notable people in the past (back when people actually wrote letters[?!?]), giving a small glimpse into their daily lives and personalities. It's really interesting.

Here's one from Frank Sinatra completely telling-off a newspaper writer and challenging him to a wager over his claims: (click to make bigger)
